Upon invitation by the Subsidiary Body for Scientific and Technological Advice (SBSTA) of the UN Framework Climate Convention (UNFCCC), the programs WCRP, IGBP, and IHDP as well as IGFA were represented on the panel of a special side event on 'research and systematic observation'. They presented their views on future research priorities together with representatives from IPCC and the International Energy Agency (IEA). This event was meant to be the beginning of an ongoing dialogue between the UNFCCC SBSTA and the independent scientific programs.
